"Rate My Hat!" Round two- Mayser vs Conte of Florence

It's back!

Rate my hat two - Swiss edition!

I haven't been able to find out the names of these two hats, only the companies that make them, so there will be PRIZES for anyone who can prove they know the names of these two hats!

Up first the Conte of Florence-

Second, the Mayser-

  1. THE MAYSER THE MAYSER IT'S PRACTICALLY AN INDIANA JONES FEDORA

  2. Hmm, a tricky one. I do rather like the Conte, however I do not believe it suits you as much as the bowler. The Mayser on the other hand, looks very much the adventurer's hat, so I'll go with that one. :)

  3. Hmmm. I suspect the Comte is only suitable if your adventure is camping in the Scottish Borders during the 1970s.

    The Mayser however is an adventurer's bonnet!

  4. I must say the Conte does look a little limp around the edges and is overshadowed entirely by the unyielding sense of adventure provided by the Mayser. The Mayser is by far the superior headpiece!

  5. The conte looks to me like a trilby that has, 'fraid to say, been slumming it with some bucket hats and taking on their soggy habits. Or conversely a bucket hat that is fighting for social hat mobility and displaying trilby-esque properties. The Mayser, I'd like to say is an akubra or bush hat, only I can't see the top to check if I'm right and it looks a touch small.

    Either way, the Mayser looks much better.

  6. I don't know if the first hat has a name, it appears to be a slightly modified fedora. The second is neither a fedora, or (as commonly mistaken) Indy's hat, which is also a high crown fedora. Rather, it follows the pattern of the Austrailian hat, the Akubra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akubra. I think the Akubra suits you better, but runs the risk of being somewhat cliched. The first hat, however, is more distinctive and original. It could be you that makes that style of hat famous, and get it named the Linsell!

    Sorry if I'm being a hat Nazi!

  7. RJ makes some good points there, but just on general principles the Florence hat looks like a man-around-the-town hat. Not a man-in-the-jungle-hat.

    Instead the Mayser looks like it could withstand torrential down pours of rain or stylishly float on water or even cover your eyes while you sleep on long journeys while you variously use your bullwhip or pistol to escape from the nazis... I MEAN, while you trek through the jungle or journey to visit the queen... Yes indeed.

  8. As we seem unable to avoid Indy asides, here is my analogy:
    Conte = Dr Jones Sr.
    Akubra = Dr Jones Jr.

    This holds for me even if Sean was wearing a walking brim while portraying the elder. It even adds some General Grant in.

  9. Definitely the Mayser - it seems it adds an extra dimension of drama to everyday activities - so when doing more unusual persuits.... BEHOLD MY HAT OF CRYSTALLISED AWESOME!!

  10. Belated, I know, but...
    The hat you refer to as the Mayser looks all but identical to a hat made by a company called "Jaxon", which they refer to as a "Crushable Outback". I have one myself, though due to it's soft(ish) nature it has a tendancy to become distorted if one isn't careful how one stores it.
